Life in Cooperstown

A house on Main Street in Cooperstown, New York.

There are a variety of fun and interesting activities that take place year-round in Cooperstown or nearby. Cooperstown is situated at the southern end of Otsego Lake, which offers beautiful sunsets and opportunities for swimming, kayaking, fishing and rowing (experts and beginners alike!). During the winter months, students enjoy skiing, snowshoeing, and hiking. The Clark Sports Center is less than a mile away and has all the exercise and fitness opportunities you could want. There are also plenty of scenic running routes around Cooperstown, and Glimmerglass State Park on the north end of the lake has excellent hiking trails. Often times, you can find Columbia-Bassett students making a pit stop to Stagecoach Coffee. Students also enjoy the weekly Cooperstown Farmer’s Market, which offers an abundance of local produce and is open year-round. The Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers Museum, and Baseball Hall of Fame are right on your doorstep. Just a few miles away are the Ommegang Brewery, Fly Creek Cider Mill and the Glimmerglass Opera House, which are all fun summer/fall-time adventures. Students particularly enjoy Firepit Fridays at Ommegang Brewery. While all of these activities are fun for Columbia-Bassett students, we must also mention The Smithy Gallery, where students take up pottery classes through the year.
